It's Time to Kick White and Gray to the Curb

January 2022 cover of Furniture Lighting & Decor Magazine

Look at all these colors! It's like the party has already started. Cheryl Kees Clendendon, Owner and Lead Designer of In Details Interiors, is the designer and the winner of the magazine's cover contest.

When the January 2022 issue of Furniture Lighting & Decor magazine arrived at the studio, I gasped and did a happy dance. The cover thrilled me with friendly, inviting colors. Gone are the whites and grays that I view as unfriendly to children and pets.

Pantone created an entirely new hue for its 2022 pick, a first in the 23-year history of the program.

We're in a new time when making our homes cozy and alive with color, patterns, and textures is back in style. It prompted me to check out Pantone's color of the year. I wasn't disappointed. This year's color, "very peri," is purple, a unique shade that combines cool blue with warm violet-red undertones. Using purple has always been courageous; it encourages personal inventiveness and creativity. Other shades of Veri Peri will make whites more hospitable and grays earthier. What energizes and inspires me about this color is that it sings beautifully with other lively colors like reds, pinks, golds, and oranges. It can be warm or cool, and it happily hums with the browns and greens of nature and ceramics. I've long been a fan of vibrant colors and have used them for years at home and in my work. I'm thrilled to be in style again.

Here I explored the possible greens available to use with the lavender and green background colors I chose. on a 8” x 8” tile.

I did a piece years ago for the Arts and Crafts Conference held yearly at the Grove Park Inn in Asheville, NC. Mixing leftover glazes, I came up with this beautiful blue-purple that works great with pink and green.
