Love, Luck, and Passion verses Live Long and Prosper
I love creating my work: the mindful meditation of cutting the tile, the challenge of composition, and the Christmas morning-like experience of opening the glaze kiln. Titling the pieces for a show is still tricky.
New Show at Rebus Works Cafe and Grocery: "Symbols of Home–Raleigh, NC"
Happy New Year!!! After being off my legs for the last few weeks of December, I eased into the New Year by making mugs for my upcoming show "Symbols of Home–Raleigh NC" at Rebus Works Cafe and Grocery. It was a great way to warm up the studio and my skills; I plan to decorate them with a decal of Sir Walter Raleigh's face from this month's Walter Magazine cover.
Guess where Sir Walter Raleigh will be on January 1st?
Thanks for coming out last week to our open house. The weather was frightful, but the event was delightful. Despite the rain, we had a good crowd.

This Year the Meaning of Thanksgiving Feels Especially Powerful
Yesterday, as my husband and I drove the uncongested highways leading to NC's beautiful coast, I connected to all I'm grateful for this Thanksgiving. Family, friends, studio mates, and more.
Red is for Everyone, but Green is Available too!
There is a red for everyone, and I'm delighted that almost all of you are on the red ornament parade. The traditional red will surround the little bees. Let’s send these little affirmations out across the country to multiply in the real world.
Want Christmas Ornaments that Charm and Celebrate Nature?
It's funny how ideas get stuck in our heads like Christmas trees are green. Christmas trees come in all colors, including pink, which I find hard to imagine at my house, but I've seen it done beautifully at others. I love my bee ornaments but have labored trying to make them Christmasy, as in beautiful on a green Christmas tree.
Bee Fantastic –I'm Busy Creating for the Season of Giving
Christmas ornament-making is seriously underway, and they'll bee fantastic. I'll have the finished picture next week.
#wip = Work in Progress
I thought I’d show you some of the work finished and in progress at the studio this week, and also talk about what’s inspiring me this Autumn.
Back in Studio
I'm happy to say I'm back at work and teaching; my first class was Sunday. It went off without a hitch, and classes are open for October.
20/20 Vision and Colorful Optimism
There's nothing like 20/20 vision to let you know you've been in a state of colorful optimism. When I wrote two weeks ago, I had hoped to do some work while recovering from knee surgery.
Table Lamps, Commissions, and Nesting
I've done a few firings since the last time I posted, and here's some of the new work you can look forward to seeing at the Boylan Heights ArtWalk, plus my latest fireplace commission.
No matter how much you love them, some things need replacing.
I know everyone says they wished they'd done it sooner, but there is a sadness to losing something you've had for over sixty years. Me and my knees have done a lot together.
Going West for Fun and Profit
After lamenting about failed firings, I wanted to show you all the work the kiln gods have blessed this Summer. If you see something you like, please say so now, because next week I'll be heading west to Asheville and Black Mountain to stock galleries for the holidays.
F*ck ups and Disappointments
Thursday, excitement turned to dismay when I opened the kiln and saw that the background glaze had either fallen off the pots onto the shelf or crawled, a condition where the glaze crawls away from itself.
I love sexy. What nature offers is better than a women's volleyball game.
The inspiration for my work comes from nature, and because I live in a city, it's in the form of gardens. Watching flowers as they begin to bloom, you can sometimes see a change in as little as an hour.
You can ignore this, but please don't
The Beatle's song "When I'm 64" keeps popping into my head lately. Not so much for what the lyrics address, but it's catchy; I'm that age, and what is significant now is change. I'm considering the difference between passion and purpose when working in the studio. The first is about me; the second is about you.
It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas; here's why.
We all know Christmas is joyous as it is busy, but when you make what you sell, the season is more dynamic than ever. And it starts early. This year I got a jump on it by ordering some new colors to make the season delightful for both of us.
I’m selfish, I wont share your information with anyone.
