Love, Luck, and Passion verses Live Long and Prosper
I love creating my work: the mindful meditation of cutting the tile, the challenge of composition, and the Christmas morning-like experience of opening the glaze kiln. Titling the pieces for a show is still tricky.
By writing the blog, I've gotten better with words. Still, titles affect what the viewer sees; I always want that to be positive. Because the exhibit at Rebus Works is labeled "Symbols of Home, " I googled some symbols to see what they mean and to spur ideas and creative writing. To my delight, all our city's symbols represent enjoying a good life.
12” x 18” ceramic art tile with a male cardinal and a blooming branch of dogwood flowers.
For example, cardinals represent devotion, loving relationships, courtship, and monogamy. Many associate the red beauty with memories of passed loved ones. Sunflowers are Spock-like in that they represent a long and prosperous life. Dogwoods signify rebirth, resurrection, and purity. They also symbolize strength. Although delicate looking, both flower and tree can withstand harsh weather conditions. While I haven't named or even made all the pieces for the show, all these words embody an encouraging new year. I hope you come out and see the finished work in February. The opening is on the First Friday, February 2nd, from 6 pm to 8 pm.
Do you know anyone building or remodeling that needs a backsplash, fireplace surround, or outdoor kitchen? Help them turn from commercial to personal by sending them my way. We’ll both be sure to thank you!
