Cozy Mornings & Creative Afternoons: Rediscovering My Love for Sewing

Crafting Comfort and Creativity

If you’ve tuned into any podcasts this holiday season, you’ve probably heard it’s officially “cozy” season. And indeed, there’s something magical about wrapping yourself in warmth—both literally and creatively. As much as I enjoy the idea of cozying up at home, I’ve found that for me, being cozy also means being crafty.

A Warm Start to the Day 🍲🔥

My typical cozy day begins with dinner prep—yes, starting the day with dinner actually sets a comforting tone. I like to get a soup or stew simmering on the stove, filling the house with a homey aroma. With that comforting backdrop, I settle into crafting. While clay has long been a favorite medium of mine, this season I’ve rediscovered the joy of fabric and paper—sometimes, it’s nice not to get muddy.

Working with Pendleton Wool 🐑🧣

Before the holidays, I had begun sewing small projects like a stocking for Stella and some Christmas napkins. Then, a friend gifted me a pile of Pendleton wool in a variety of colors and sizes. Since I don’t wear plaid myself, clothing wasn’t an option. I searched for inspiration on the Pendleton website, and I decided to create throws instead. Working with such a high-quality fabric was a delight. The large pieces stayed together, making it easy to sew without the fabric's grain twisting under its weight as it went through the machine.

A funky combination of plaids put together to make a comfy warm throw.

The first throw became a birthday gift—a match for a friend whose living room colors I know well. With some smaller pieces, I crafted a cozy blanket for Stella’s bed. With one piece remaining, I’m considering making a car seat cover. I’ve discovered that wool is surprisingly easier to clean fur from compared to the car’s upholstery or cotton bedding, which makes it ideal for pet-friendly projects.

Don’t know if Stella likes red as much as I do but she sure does look great in it.

Sewing: An Old Friend Revisited 🧵❤️

Sewing was my first creative love. I felt a surge of excitement and satisfaction when I heard the rhythmic hum of the sewing machine again, and was pleased to find my hand hadn’t lost its steady touch for straight top-stitching. With some practice and confidence, I’ve started exploring Instagram for clothing ideas from independent pattern makers and looking for a new printer to handle the PDF patterns available today.

Though I paused sewing when clay captured my heart, returning to it now feels like being with an old friend I’m eager to spend time with again.
