Tile Making 101:
SESSION 2:
Tuesday 3/24, 3/31, 4/7, 4/14, 4/21, and 4/28, 6:00 pm - 9:00 pm

Learn basic tile making using slabs, coils, and other techniques with wet clay. Class will begin with a discussion of clay types, how to use the slab roller, and calculating tile shrinkage. You’ll learn to use techniques such as scribing, relief, texturing, carving, and burnishing. Time permitting we will also learn mold-making using fired clay molds as in batiking blocks and sprites. Tiles will be finished with a single glaze application. Beginner level. $300.00 plus material fee.
*Aside from the tools in the supply list below, this class will be enhanced by any special textural objects you have or see between now and class time.

Tile Making 102:
SESSION 2:
Saturday 3/14, 3/21, 3/28, 4/4, 4/11, and 4/18, 10:00 am - 1:00 pm

This class is all about surface decoration and color. A short demo on how to use the slab roller and cut tile will be given the first day. My goal is have you leave this class with a sampler of glaze decorations and a notebook on how to repeat the process when you want to. Techniques taught in this class include scraffito, cuerda seca (wax resist), stenciling, wet paper resists, engobes, slips, transferring your designs from paper to clay, underglazes, over glaze waxing, and more. Conversations will included how to mix glazes and chemical safety. Beginner and advanced. $300.00 plus material fee.

Advanced Tile Making:
SESSION 2:
Wednesday 3/11, 3/13, 3/24, 4/1, 4/8, and 4/15, 6:00 - 9:00 pm

This class is for advanced clay workers who would like to do a tile project for their own home. Students will need to be proficient in the technique they will be using for their project and able to make well crafted tiles. I will not be drawing your idea or making tiles. We’ll design and trouble shoot your project and calculate your tile sizes. As well as plan where the grout lines will go, as not to detract from the overall design. We’ll cover how to square your tiles when they go into the kiln perfect and come out of the bisque skewed. The class will include a session on how to install and the products to use. $600.00 plus material fee.

Materials Fee for all classes:

Because some students will work more than others a charge of $13.00 per 25.00 pounds of clay will be collected. This price will include clay, glazes, and firing charges. Students are welcome to make as much work as they wish.
